I've already posted on my socials; there have been some changes across all of my pages and my website. This past year, I have been in contact with the lovely people at Spectrum Books, and they will be publishing my debut novel, Rough Surf on the Coast.
It's been a long and incredible journey, and it's nearing the end now with the last things being sorted before the printers start whirring! In the meantime, I want to get everyone as excited as I am about the release.
April 2025, the UK Supreme Court changed the legal definition of a woman to exclude trans women. When I found out, I couldn't believe it was real. I couldn't believe that this country had gotten so bad that trans rights were taking a step back. Once the denial was over, I was angry. So angry that I felt empowered. I went to the protest in Cardiff with my husband, his sister and her partner. I am not someone who likes crowds, but the crowd of people screaming and showing their anger for our government had me thinking about something I could do to help aid the fight that was more than another body in a crowd.
Whilst at work a few days later, I ended up being the person who had to sit around for a couple of hours ready to help and aid if anything went wrong. Since I work for probably one of the safest places in the country, I had nothing to do and spent those few hours on my laptop with a document open, planning a book.
This isn't the first book I have planned, nor the first book I've written. It is, however, the fastest book I've written, and the longest book I've ever written. I was so into this project that I was writing on every break I had at work, people in the break room looking at me like I was crazy, as rather than resting, eating, or watching TV like most of my colleagues, I was typing with force. Every time I had an early finish, I would get home to spend a few hours writing, constantly getting so lost in it that I lost track of time completely, and all of a sudden it would be 7 am, and I had another shift in 8 hours. Every day off I would spend hours writing, with my husband coming to me, reminding me to eat and drink, providing endless cans of Pepsi, sandwiches, cuddles and support. Every time he came to me, I would show him what I had written, and he would read every word, showing support every step of the way. He even wrote the entire character creation for Devin!
I want people to read my book and learn the struggles that trans people go through in their lives and find their empowerment to fight for our rights. They say to write what you know, which is why this book is autofiction. If you haven't heard of autofiction, this book is a story of things that have happened to me in my life, but with a few changes to not only protect people involved, but also to make it just that little more entertaining to read, and to change the timelines of some events to make it a better plot, because let's face it, life is messy.
With all of that being said, over the next couple of months I will be sharing more about the book, the writing process, the cover art, and everything involved to make this happen. I look forward to sharing my excitement with you!! If you want to keep up with these developments, sign up for my emails and follow me on my socials!!
